Do you fear that not knowing how to get web design clients will prevent you from ever achieving the freedom you’ve been hoping for?
Tired of sending countless proposals only to watch them get rejected?
The demand for web design services is constantly increasing. Every serious business craves a high-quality website.
But there you are – being left out of the game…
You watch agencies and even freelancers flex with new projects weekly, yet:
- You can’t ever relax because you never know where your next deal is coming from.
- You know you’re able to create great websites, but you rarely get a chance.
- Even when you get a web design client, it’s not a project you truly enjoy working on.
- You struggle to keep your head above the water, constantly worrying about money.
Here’s a hard lesson that took me more than 10 years to learn…
Being capable of creating amazing digital assets doesn’t mean much… Unless you understand how to get web design clients at scale (good clients, not amateurs or energy vampires).
That’s the turning point for transforming your passion into a lucrative opportunity. The difference between being broke and earning 7 figures on auto-pilot.
Luckily, learning how to get more web design clients is easier than most people think. You can do it even if you’re not a natural conversationalist or good at sales right now—and without any marketing knowledge, too.
Strategies I’m about to show you work equally great if you’re a design business owner, a freelance web designer, or someone planning to quit the 9-5 hassle to start living a more fulfilled life.
If you’re a self-confident action-taker, I’m 100% sure that these fundamental principles you’ll learn here will help you attract clients without ruining your health.

The EXACT Reason Why 90% Of Web Designers Struggle To Attract Clients
Building any business, including a web design agency, operates on the same fundamental principles.
You can have all the passion and skill of this world, but growing your business will not be easy.
Over the past 15 years, I’ve seen many passionate designers quit their 9-5 jobs only to find out that being an agency owner is more difficult (before you make the system work for you – which takes time). In the beginning, all the responsibility falls onto you – getting clients, hiring a team, overlooking projects, ensuring financial health…
And without being able to attract clients, it doesn’t matter how great you are at creating websites. If you’re lucky enough, your web design business will survive long enough for you to become good at attracting clients.
But where most fail is a lack of self-confidence, which then turns into anxiety. At the root of this issue is the absence of precise tactics and strategies.
- 90% of designers (and business owners) operate on the fly with no clear plan. They never know where their next deal is coming from.
- They try to serve everyone without a clear understanding of who their ideal client is.
- They give up before digging past the shallow advice for getting clients.
This approach is a quick path to burnout, health problems, and financial instability.
Shallow advice will slow down your progress…
I went through countless courses, online articles, and other resources that promised to teach you how to get web design clients fast. However, the majority of these resources were too broad to provide any real-world value.
For example:
- ‘Build your web design portfolio’ – Wow, every agency has it, yet, most still struggle to attract clients.
- ‘Promote on social media’ – Isn’t it the first thing you tried to do? Wouldn’t it be nice if someone told you how to actually get good at it instead?
- ‘Create a company website’ – Really? Every serious business has one – and you’re running a web design agency…
Don’t get me wrong…
These are all good points, but they’re just scratching the tip of the iceberg. They only make sense if you’re completely new in the industry – but if that’s the case, you probably shouldn’t embark on your own yet.
Without a precise and strategic approach, these tactics rarely produce any results for serious business owners (or freelance web designers). They only lead to disappointment and cause many to quit.
To succeed, you need to dig deeper and seek specific knowledge that would allow you to remove the element of luck from your client acquisition process.
One more thing I’d like to address before showing strategies that worked for me. In my opinion, there’s no ‘best way to get web design clients’ – it’s always a combination of various activities that drive growth for agencies (and freelancers). So, don’t hesitate to explore various approaches and adapt.
How I’ve Built A 7-Figure Web Design Agency (Starting With $0 and ZERO Clients)
In 2013, I immigrated to the USA. Being 6,000 away from home, I could only rely on my skills and experience in building websites, creating Google Ads, and doing SEO. I didn’t have experience with sales calls at that time.
It was a challenging journey, but it laid a foundation for everything that followed.
In 2019, I decided to quit my job at a big company to fully commit to growing my digital agency, Alpha Efficiency. And I chose to do it the hard way. For years, I operated purely on intuition. My business wouldn’t have survived if I wasn’t dedicated enough to overwork myself.
4,000 projects, 500 clients, and thousands of sales calls later – I realize scaling my agency to 7-figures could have been much easier if I had focused on the right things from the start.
I’m grateful I figured this out before my health was completely ruined—many entrepreneurs aren’t so lucky.
But hey, it’s a learning curve I had to go through (and you don’t).
As I’m writing this, I’m vacationing in Europe, running Alpha Efficiency (now with 25 employees) through my iPhone. The freedom and success I enjoy today are the results of lessons learned and the strategic approach I adopted.
4 Proven Strategies To Get Web Design Clients At Scale… Without Wasting Time On Projects You Don’t Enjoy
My story doesn’t need to be yours. I’d like to share with you the strategies I’d focus on if I had to start all over again.
I hope this will help you develop the most important skill for surviving the digital age as a designer – knowing how to get web design clients at scale and ensuring they’re the kind of people you’ll enjoy creating digital assets for.
1. Upwork is a goldmine once you learn how to use it properly
There are over 18 million Upwork users in 2024. But don’t let this statistic scare you off if you’re learning how to find web design clients while trying to become a freelance web designer. In fact, most freelancers don’t know how to use Upwork properly to attract potential clients. Here’s what I suggest doing:
- Optimize your profile completely: Ensure your Upwork profile is 100% complete. Fill out all required sections, including your profile photo, bio, employment history, and skills tags. Add additional sections like portfolio items, certifications, and education to enhance your profile’s appeal and searchability. Use relevant keywords throughout your profile to improve visibility in Upwork’s search algorithm.
- Make your bio client-focused: Analyzing hundreds of profiles on Upwork, I’ve noticed that website designers who get hired the most are the ones whose bios are client-focused. What does this mean? Highlight how you can improve your clients’ lives and businesses. Focus on your unique selling points, such as responsiveness, quality of work, and quick turnaround times. Keep it concise, and make sure the most relevant information is at the top.
- Combine keywords and your USP in the title: Your title plays a crucial role in Upwork’s search algorithm. It should combine keywords you want to appear for with your unique selling points. Here’s how I did it: “WordPress Web Designer to Rank You On The First Page of Google.
- Use project catalog listings: Create up to three project catalog listings to offer pre-packaged services. Clients will be able to book your services directly, increasing your chances of securing projects without spending connects or sending proposals.
- Always collect testimonials: Some web designers I talked to feel shy to ask clients for testimonials. There’s absolutely no reason for that. If you do a good job, clients will be more than happy to do it for you.
2. Build funnels to attract your dream clients
Investing time in building and optimizing website conversion funnels is how you can stop relying on luck and become a serious business. Here’s a quick explanation so you can gain a basic idea of how to set your funnels up and start attracting ideal clients:
- Understanding Awareness Levels: Some clients may be unaware of their need for a web designer, while others are actively seeking your services. Segment your audience into different stages of awareness: unaware, problem-aware, solution-aware, and most-aware.
- Attracting Leads: Use content marketing, social media, and SEO to drive traffic to your website. Offer valuable resources like eBooks, webinars, or free consultations to capture leads.
- Nurturing Leads: Implement email marketing campaigns to keep your leads engaged. Provide them with useful content that addresses their pain points and showcases your expertise.
- Converting Leads: Use persuasive calls to action and offer irresistible proposals to convert leads into clients. Make it easy for them to say yes by offering clear value and solutions to their problems.
3. Build your referral tribe
Building a referral network can exponentially grow your client base. It allows you to create a steady stream of warm leads without spending excessive time or resources.
Here’s how to do it effectively:
- Leverage Existing Relationships: Your current clients and professional contacts are invaluable sources of referrals. Satisfied clients are likely to refer you to others, especially if you’ve delivered exceptional service.
- Create a Referral Program: Develop a formal referral program that incentivizes your clients and network to refer new clients to you. Offer rewards such as discounts, free services, or other perks for successful referrals. This not only motivates them to refer but also builds loyalty.
- Network Strategically: Attend industry events, join relevant online communities, and engage with other professionals in your field. Building genuine relationships through networking can lead to referral opportunities. Ensure you’re offering value in these interactions rather than just seeking referrals.
- Provide Exceptional Service: Consistently delivering high-quality work and excellent customer service ensures that your clients are happy to refer you. A strong reputation for reliability and quality is one of the most effective ways to generate referrals.
- Ask for Referrals: Don’t be afraid to ask satisfied clients for referrals. Often, clients are happy to refer you but may not think to do so unless prompted. Timing your request appropriately—such as after completing a successful project—can increase the likelihood of getting a referral.
4. Don’t try to close the deal during sales call at any cost … Here’s what I’ve learned after over 1,500 of them
All the tactics I’ve previously mentioned will go to waste unless you learn how to convert potential clients during the sales call. Some business owners like to brag about how they never had jitters before sales calls, but I assure you that everyone does at the beginning.
I still remember how nervous I was before the first call with a potential client.
1,500 sales calls later, I realize that you shouldn’t treat these conversations as ‘sales’ calls. Think of them as a chance to find out if you’d like to work on a project and if you can actually provide value to potential customers.
If you see red flags, don’t be afraid to turn down the client. In the beginning, this might sound like a crazy idea, but in 99% of cases, it’s better not to even start a project if it smells of disaster.
Here are general rules you want to follow during your sales calls (over time, you’ll develop your own style and confidence):
- Research your potential client’s business and industry before the call. Understand their pain points and be ready to offer custom solutions.
- Show genuine interest in their needs, and make it clear that it’s your mutual goal for the project to succeed.
- Let your potential client speak and listen carefully. Don’t be afraid to ask clarification questions; you’re not supposed to know everything about their niche on the first call.
- Be prepared to address any objections or concerns they may have. Turn objections into opportunities to further demonstrate the value of your services.
- If you feel the positive energy flowing, express that you’d like to work on their project. If not, save time and energy for both sides and explain that you’re not the best fit for their needs.
How To Earn Your First $10,000 As A Web Design Agency Owner (In 90 Days or Less)
As I previously mentioned, over the past 15 years, I’ve invested over $25,000 in courses, coaching, and everything in between in an attempt to grow my Chicago web design agency. I worked on over 4,000 projects – some were for amazing clients, and some were for businesses I wish I never had to meet.
I’ve distilled this whole journey into a framework I wish I had when I was starting out or during all those sleepless nights trying to keep my business alive.
It took me over 3 months alone to put together this framework I symbolically named Infinite Deals. It will provide you with:
- A 90-day Success Plan outlining the exact actions you need to take to earn your first $10,000 from agency clients.
- Templates, strategies, and inspirations to keep your marketing and sales ideas flowing.
- A sneaky way top-performing agencies optimize their Upwork profiles to acquire high-quality web design leads daily.
- Insights on how I run a 7-figure agency while working 3 hours per day or LESS (and the exact steps you can take to achieve the same level of freedom).
- Lifetime access to my masterclasses (held every quarter), where you can ask questions, learn from other community members, and open new partnership opportunities.
By taking consistent action for 3 months, you’ll be able to get the ball rolling and start working on projects you enjoy, and clients who are worth your time and effort.
The Infinite Deals Framework will give you enough inertia to confidently scale your agency without risking your well-being, working long hours, or living in uncertainty.
